Some Thoughts

If there were ever a prophet among us it was Octavia E. Butler. She was indeed a prophet precisely because only a few took heed. The road to her wisdom was narrow. She saw the world’s future so clearly and her take on the Divine was revelatory. Her book planted these words “God is Change” deep into my soul. I have not been able to shake these words for two plus years. The reason this book means so much to me is because it may be one of the most relevant readings for our present time in America. For those who are not familiar with it, Parable of the Sower is a dystopian futurist novel. The main character is a teen named Lauren who lives in the year 2024. (I told you it was relevant). She and her family reside in a barricaded neighborhood that protects itself from the outside world, which is falling apart across the US. The core government has collapsed and corporations now run safe neighborhoods. Climate change has ravaged the world leading to rapid social and economic decline...

The story demonstrates that no matter how hard we try to hold on to the best times the activity of change is always working. It is neither good nor bad. Change is very much like the God that Moses met at the burning bush. When the prophet asked “Who should I say you are?” God answered “I am that I am.” 

Change is what it is. No amount of resisting change will cease it. I’ve begun to find more peace in the truth that change is natural and persistent. It is what I should know, expect and even embrace.
